The Speaker of the National Assembly is elected to and removed from office in terms of Article 51 of the Constitution. 

The Speaker represents the National Assembly in all its powers, functions and dignity within and outside the Chamber. He/she is also responsible for presenting the Parliament Budget Vote in the Chamber. In executing these functions the Speaker ensures that the Standing Rules and Orders are applied and adhered to.

The Speaker resumes the highest seat in the House and is the primary Presiding Officer, responsible for the control and order of the House.
